OTAKU GUIDE to SURVIVE from FIRE !

Yesterday my company had a fire drill with the local fire department and we train how to get use with the raging fire, so that in case of fire, we dont run away, but managed to control / extinguish it in time before it get worst or spreading everywhere.

This fire drill is very important to my company, because we handle LPG, a very flammable  substance, so we must be very spontanious if there are any fire suddenly appear.

Because even the smallest and innocent looking fire can become a very big frightening fire in the end, if nobody react to extinguish it in time.

Now that I think of it, we Otakus who are mostly collectors really in the need to knowing the basic knowlegde of putting out fire.

Because we collect things that really can be burn easily, like plastic model kits, PVC figurine, art books, mangas or comics and many more. Off course for modeler the threat are even more dangerous, because we use many flammable substances in our room, like paint thinner, the paints them self, electronics like airbrush compressors, and other things too.

Most likely many of us doesn't even bother if there's a malfunction in the electricity tools that we have like when we plug the cord and it make small spark at first plugging in, though we know the danger of it can cause fire in some way (if there's paper around and somehow catch that small spark).

But the threat is real so here's some tips for your own safety guys

1. Prepare a small Fire Extinguisher in your room.
The smaller one is 1kg size and for the powder type it only cost as much as a HGUC kit, but I recommend you use the 2kg which cost as much as a MG kit, or more bigger size for more protection.

2. Get to know how to use the Fire Extinguisher.
Don't just read the label, you should buy small one to use as a fire drill lesson, or if you want to safe money play simulation without using real fire and without opening the seal, just pretend there is really a fire and react quickly, because our reaction safe our precious collections. the fastest the better.

3. Make sure all your electricity wiring are OK.
Check the cables condition, and use the safe electricity wiring standard don't buy cheap electricity wiring for your own good.

4. Keep  flammable substance in a safe container.
Don't just put or litter it anywhere in your room ( this is how many of us do in our room because I used to do that too :p ). Put them in a special box for paints and thinner, and etc. So if a fire reach them, the container can hold the fire from catching the flammable substance inside for a moment, which you can use to extinguish it.

5.It's time to tidy up your room.
You don't have to do it daily, but if you keep your room tidy, small fire are more easily being taken care of because it won't easily spread out, and if your room in a mess, it will spread out quickly through your messy things.

6. For emergency use wet cloth !
If a fire occur and still dont have any Fire Extinguisher, or far from it, use a huge piece of cloth like huge towel, fabric sheet, coat or anything, and soaked them in water first, then run to the fire and place it over the fire.

7. Shout for help and call the Fire Department
If its more than 5 minute, and the fire still exist, just forget about your collection, just grab the some if you can, and run outside, shout for help, and call the Fire Department.

8. Remember that Your life is the most important thing!
This is because I also cherish my collection so much, I know how hard it is to just leave them in the fire, but remember, as long as you still alive, you can start collecting again.

And here are the instruction for using Small Fire extinguisher and emergency wet cloth

THE SMALL FIRE EXTINGUISHER :

There are  3 type of this, Powder type, Carbon-dioxide type, and Foam type (this type are rare and use in special environment only)

The powder type are the cheapest of them all, but because its cartridge type, they can only be use once,
when the cartridge seal are broken for first time use.the gas keeps being release a bit by bit even when unpressed, until the pressure are gone. that's why it can only be use once.

In case of fire, grab the nearest Fire Extinguisher, before you go to the fire, do the following steps first :
1. Pull the safety pin first on its trigger handle.
2. Break the cartridge seal by hitting the trigger once, while holding the end of the nossle up, this is also mean to check is it functional.

3.Carry the Fire Extinguisher by holding it at the bottom trigger and the left hand ready to aim at the fire.
than in about 3-4 meter range of the fire, push the trigger to start and aim the nossle to the fire.
Do this until the fire off  :)

The Carbon-dioxide type
we can recognize its a carbon-dioxside type  by the shape of it nossle, the nossle have a long cone shape
if we use this, make sure you hold the nossle at the bottom of the cone, because if you hold it at the cone, the cold carbon-dioxide kan freeze your skin to the cone, so when you let go, your skin can still intact in the cone.

THE EMERGENCY WET CLOTH :

1.Grab the cloth for the fire, the thicker the fabric the better, soaked it in water first.
2.Pinch at the two corner of the wet cloth, then twist it so that your own hands are protected by the cloth.

3.Rise it to the height of your head, and walk to the fire, with the cloth sideway.

4. Be very careful nearing the fire,  watch the wind blow around you to prevent being sweep by the fire.

5. Keep make sure to cover your head with the cloth when it's near, then put the cloth on the fire.

6.make sure you cover all of the fire with the cloth, it there are still  some of it escape, go get more wet cloth to cover it again. do this until the fire off.

This is a fight with your fear of fire, but remember that your precious collections are in stake, so don't get scare near the fire, because they won't bite!, they just sting and burn you a little :p

But still, we better prevent it than we have to deal with it !
